Hydrogen Storage Technologies: An Overview

Hydrogen is becoming increasingly important as a clean energy carrier that can help reduce emissions from vehicles and other applications. However, efficient and cost-effective hydrogen storage remains a key challenge that needs to be addressed in order for hydrogen technologies to reach their full potential. This article provides an overview of the various methods currently being researched for hydrogen storage.

Physical Storage Methods
One of the most basic methods of hydrogen storage involves compressing or liquefying it for physical storage onboard vehicles or in stationary tanks.

Compressed Hydrogen Gas Storage
Hydrogen Storage can be compressed and stored under high pressure in onboard fuel tanks. Most hydrogen vehicles currently use compressed gas storage up to 70 MPa. However, the high pressures required mean large, heavy tanks are needed which reduces vehicle driving range. Ongoing R&D aims to improve tank construction materials to allow for higher pressures with lighter weight tanks.
